I’m thrilled to announce the cover of my debut nonfiction picture book, COYOTE MOON, to be published by Roaring Brook Press in July 2016!
Isn’t the cover stunning? It was illustrated by the incomparable Bagram Ibatoulline! His illustrations are so intricately detailed that they appear photographic. I am so fortunate to have him as the illustrator of this book which is near and dear to my heart, and to be working with editor extraordinaire, Emily Feinberg!
Here’s a synopsis:
A howl in the night.
A watchful eye in the darkness.
A flutter of movement among the trees.
Coyotes.
In the dark of the night a mother coyote stalks prey to feed her hungry pups. Her hunt takes her through a suburban town where she encounters a mouse, a rabbit, a flock of angry geese, and finally an unsuspecting turkey on the library lawn.
POUNCE!
Perhaps Coyote’s family won’t go hungry today.
Thanks for letting me share this with you!
Happy Monday!

It’s so finely detailed, it’s just incredible, Carole! I wonder how long it takes for him to paint one scene–you can see the fine hairs, and in some of the other paintings, the conifer needles and tree bark and blades of grass too!

I’m a huge admirer of coyotes (despite their waking me up at night with their howling sometimes). I love their tenacity and ability to survive and thrive. I know I’m going to love this book!

This is one of those books that I’m crazy jealous of and wish I’d written myself, even more so now that I see that insanely gorgeous cover. I guess I’ll just have to add it my library of literary treasures. Congratulations, Maria! You must be over the coyote moon!! =D

As a child, I was drawn to nonfiction books. As an educator, I invited students to read nonfiction books I checked out on topics we were studying. I hope lots of teachers and librarians encourage readers to check this one out. The cover is a page turner! What a great way to get a kid to discover more about coyotes.
